Question no. 2: „If I want to acquire my romanian citizenship after my romanian ancestor, do I have to speak romanian? I am born in Israel/abroad”

Answer: No, according to the provisions of Article 10 and Article 11 of Law 21/1991 on Romanian citizenship, applicants are not required to demonstrate knowledge of the Romanian language.

Article 10 deals with the reacquisition of Romanian citizenship by former citizens.

Article 11 applies to foreign nationals and they are not required to speak romanian language.

Though, there are Embassies and Consulates that might reject the application due to lack of romanian language. The applicants have the legal right to file a claim against the rejection order and request for its cancelation.
